GB Skateboard Championships 2022

A new Olympic sport, medal hopefuls and two of the UK best Skate parks……it can only be the GB Skateboarding x Habito National Park and Street Championships.

GB Skateboarding x Habito Street Championships 2023. An athlete grinds a rail during the broadcast.

This year the competition was spread across two weekends and two epic venues; The XC in Hemel Hempstead for the Park event and Bay Sixty6 in London for Street. It wasn’t just GB skateboarding that upped their game though, Technative also brought some serious upgrades to the party. With a roaming camera operator ON a skateboard, one of the BBC’s finest talents in the form of James Threlfall (MBE no less!!) and a flashy new graphics package.

The new graphics worked seamlessly with GB Skateboards new scoring system, and this is one of our biggest selling points. We can work with almost any scoring system, whether that’s a bespoke package with an API or a simple google sheet. The data is scraped from whatever you’re using and transformed into clean, easy to read graphics.

Anyhow, back to the competition. Working on a broadcast for the BBC, we were under strict guidelines but that didn’t stop us creating some brilliant video content for the pre-show. We always like to tell a story rather than just show the action, and also love to highlight the athletes. This second point is even more important in a fledgling Olympic sport like Skateboarding, where all the athletes can benefit from more exposure. That’s why we created the finalists VT, a animated video consisting of a photograph and information on each of the finalists, which our two expert commentators then talked over to bring the audience even more insight and to show off the incredible talent coming through in the UK.
